Lookers Ford, Sheffield and Relaxing Alternatives are bringing wellbeing onto the forecourt!
Edwin Thomas (Franchise Director) comments "From walking on the site it is apparent that we are not the fittest bunch of people, we knew we had to address what we eat & the lack of exercise many of us under take. We called Relaxing Alternatives in to help and so far Karen and her team have help us run two really great events.
"The first event created a real buzz in the place, say's Karen (Founder of Relaxing Alternatives). People are always curious when something new is introduced and from 8.30am we had people queing to get their blood pressure,weight and BMI checked by Kellyanne (Relaxing Alternatives Fitness Instructor)".
Many people were shocked by their blood pressure and BMI reading. One individual had such high blood pressure that he was advised to seek medical advice that day and was later admitted to hospital resulting in medication for the rest of his life.
Karen comments "This is proof that initiatives like this not only increase awareness and improve productivity but more importantly potentially save lifes". High Blood pressure is more common than people realise, often there aren't any symptoms which is why it is important to get it checked out on a regular basis.
Staff also got the chance to try healthy alternatives to crisps, chocolate and fizzy drinks. Having whizzed up some deliciously healthy juices and smoothies in the kitchen Karen encouraged people to give them a try and most where pleasently suprised. Nuts, Fresh fruit, dried fruit, vegetables and low fat homemade dips were on offer and needless to say there really wasn't much left by the end of the day!
Karen was on hand giving information supplied by the British Heart Foundation and advice about eating habits, general health issues, relaxation and stress. Whilst Kellyanne gave away free vouchers for personal one to one fitness training with her at a local Gym.
The day was a great success with over 35 people attending. Edwin says "Following the first visit many staff reviewed the type of foods they eat and as reccomened by Karen we have displayed information charts in key areas of the business".
The second visit saw even more people attend proving that the wellbeing message is being taken seriously. On this occasion Relaxing Alternatives concentrated on cholesterol testing. Luckily all 38 people that attended had normal levels apart from one which was just slightly on the high side. Blood Pressure was re monitored resulting in a second staff member having to seek doctors advice, luckily nothing serious on this occasion!
"We are trying to educate the staff towards healthy eating and perhaps more exercise as we believe that a healthy work force will be happier and take less sick days" says Edwin. "We will certainly be doing more with relaxing alternatives in the New Year and hopefully getting some New Year resolutions from the staff !"
